ASTON, Pa., Oct. 16, 2020 — The Aston Township Fire Department yesterday formally accepted a grant in the amount of $44,014.80 from Energy Transfer, which aided in the purchase of equipment to outfit the department’s new fire house.
Energy Transfer is one of the largest and most diversified energy logistics companies in the country, with approximately 3,000 miles of pipeline infrastructure and gathering systems located in Pennsylvania. The company also awarded Aston Township Fire Department a grant in 2017 in the amount of $37,319.90, which aided in the purchase of air monitoring equipment, a docking station, a carbon-monoxide monitor and various other rescue equipment.
“Between rising operations costs and having to cancel our primary fundraisers this year due to the pandemic, our fire department is essentially ‘breaking even,’” said Aston Township Fire Chief Mike Evans. “This grant from Energy Transfer, along with grants from Aston Township and the state of Pennsylvania, came at the perfect time and will allow us to better serve our community as we work to build a new, state-of-the-art facility.”
Beyond Aston Township, the Aston Township Fire Department provides service to Upper Chichester Township, Marcus Hook Borough, Lower Chichester Township, Chester Township, Trainer Borough, Middletown Township and Chester Heights Borough. The department also provides mutual aid to Energy Transfer’s Twin Oaks terminal and Marcus Hook Industrial Complex.
Four Energy Transfer Employees who work at the Marcus Hook Industrial Complex are members of the Aston Township Fire Department.
“Growing up next to the Marcus Hook facility and now living with my family in Aston, our relationships with Aston Township Fire and the other local departments mean a lot to me,” said Joe McGinn, Vice President, Public Affairs at Energy Transfer. “We are honored to maintain a close partnership with Chief Evans and the team, and to show support through monetary grants, volunteer support and trainings.”
Chief Evans noted that there are two phases of the firehouse construction project. Phase one is underway, and the second and final phase is expected to be completed by December 2021.
“We are pleased to play a part in funding this important project for the safety and protection of the township,” said Aston Township Commissioner Nancy Bowden. “This new facility has been a long time coming, and it is wonderful to see it come to fruition, thanks to companies like Energy Transfer, as well as township and state grants. In a time when supporting our first responders is critical, this is a huge win.”
The Energy Transfer First Responder Fund provides grants to help further the primary mission of first responder organizations, including local fire departments; emergency medical services; county emergency management agencies; county, regional and local police departments; and other eligible agencies. Grants are determined based on a competitive application and review process, and written applications are accepted on a rolling basis for the following cycle.
